Tobacco Control Program

The project objective is to reduce tobacco use by making the target area that consists of Barisal Division and 5 districts of Dhaka Division Smoke-free. The project was launched in October, 2009. The project has involved and activated all concerned stakeholders to play their roles in the effective manner for implementing Tobacco Control law putting special emphasis to make public places and public transports smoke-free. Efforts have also been taken to establish a system to sustain the activities by means of collaboration with local authorities comprising law enforcers, taskforces, mobile courts, local government, journalists, NGOs, civil society members and other formal and informal leaders.

The following services are being provided in the project:
  • • Organize Sharing meetings with taskforce members, other govt. officials, NGOs, CBOs, civil society and media people on tobacco control Act 2005 for forming / functioning the Taskforces.
  • • Assist to conduct Taskforce committee meetings quarterly basis to discuss and to implement tobacco control law.
  • • Assist to operate mobile courts on six-monthly basis in order to implement tobacco control law.
  • • Conduct sensitization meetings on six-monthly basis with authorities and owners of public places like- markets, offices, bus/launch/ terminals, hospitals, shopping malls, etc. for making them aware about tobacco control act and to make those spots smoke free.
  • • Conduct sensitization meetings on yearly basis with transport owners and workers associations like- bus, truck, launch, tempo, etc. to aware them about tobacco control Law.
  • • Conduct sharing meetings on six-monthly basis with different stakeholders like government, NGOs, CBOs.
  • • Conduct regional/divisional level smoke free experience sharing meetings with policy makers, government representatives, NGOs, journalists, members of civil society.
  • • Develop and procure BCC materials from different relevant organizations
  • • Produce and install 12 large and 1,000 small sign-boards in strategic spots.
  • • Organize awareness activities/events on smoke free at community level quarterly basis-folksongs/drama.
  • • Develop, procure and install ‘No smoking’ signage.
  • • Publish newsletter once in a year on project activities.
  • • Conduct advocacy meetings with local print and electronic media people.
  • • Conduct orientation meeting on Tobacco control Act 2005 and its implementation at upazila level
  • • Conduct one day capacity building workshop to management/field level staff of 78 partner NGOs and CBOs.
  • • Form Community Vigilance Team (CVT)
  • • Conduct follow up meeting for Community Vigilance Team (CVT)
  • • Conduct Base line survey.
